This project consisted of building three identical treatment plants with essentially the same raw water quality in three different locations on the East Bank of Demerara, Guyana. These plants treat raw water from 'A'-sand aquifers around 800 feet below the ground. The water is typically high in iron content and contains a number of induced gases. The purpose of the treatment plant is to remove the iron from the water, expel out the dissolved gases and meeting/exceeding the World Health Organization's drinking water standards.
In addition to the various treatment processes provided, each plant was provided with:
The plants were designed, installed and commissioned by UEM to produce treated water within the WHO drinking water specifications. The plants were successfully commissioned in July 2003 and have been producing quality water at the design flow rate since. On average, the treated water has <0.5 NTU turbidity and <0.1 iron content. The plant operation runs on a state of PLC system and is fully automatic.
