Water Desalination Plant; Capacity: 10.5 MLD

The National Oil Refinery embarked upon a major potable water and desalination production, transmission and distribution project at total project cost of 11 million USD. The project included the design and construction of 10.5 MLD net water output treatment plant. UEM was chosen for the design and construction of the water treatment plant among several international bidders.

The fully automated desalination plant is designed to treat surface water from a river. The water is characterized by a high TDS concentration (3500 ppm) and a TSS concentration of 300 ppm.

The treatment plant consists of following treatment steps:

Pre-chlorination for controlling algae growth
Filtration through Horizontal Pressure Sand Filters
Filtration through Horizontal Activated Carbon Filters
Alum dosing as coagulant
Static mixing for coagulation
Fine filtration through Cartridge Filters
Pre-RO pH correction through Acid injection
Scaling protection through Antiscalant dosing
De-chlorination through Sodium Meta bi-sulphite
Desalination of the Filtered Water through Reverse Osmosis technology
Cleaning and Flushing for RO Membranes
High Head pumping for Boosting Pressure for Reverse Osmosis Membranes
Post pH Correction and Permeate storage Tanks
Mixed Bed De-ionization System

UEM was responsible for the complete design, the designers supervision for the supply and installation of M&E plants and equipment, and the complete automation of the plant with state of art PLC/SCADA of Siemens 400 H Series technology. This plant was completed in July 2004.
