Shampoo & Soap Unit Wastewater Treatment System

PT Procter & Gamble (P&G) operate a Shampoo cum health / beauty care products manufacturing unit in Jakarta. During the manufacturing process, five different wastewater streams (Shampoo, Candy, Health Care, Beauty Care and Lab Discharge streams) containing a high BOD/COD are generated. This high BOD/COD wastewater can be anaerobically treated to significantly reduce the operating power required, which can be quite high for an aerobic treatment system.

Accordingly, P&G, Indonesia chose UEM Inc., USA to install an anaerobic treatment system for a design flow of 250 M3/day with a BOD of 5,900 mg/l and a COD of 13,000 mg/l. It was decided to flare the biogas generated for the time being, in the Gas Flare System.

UEM provided a variation on the traditional design for an anaerobic digester, called an Anaerobic Hybrid System which is a combination of an UASB (upflow anaerobic sludge blanket) zone at the bottom of the digester and a Fill Media zone at the top of the digester (above the UASB). The Hybrid Digester is a vertical wall circular MS bolted tank, glass lined on both the inner and outer walls (Glass Fused to Steel Tank) with a floating geo-membrane cover roof. A biogas collector system is built under this floating roof.
